the latest national polls show the president tied with mitt romney. >> and mitt romney is spending a whole day in the buckeye state. the time in one state is just temporary. yesterday the governor blitzed other battleground states through appearances in nevada and iowa. >> real estate mobile donald trump has become a leading critic of obama. trump offered to donate $5 million to charity if the president releases his applications for college and his passport. the president poked fun last night in an appearance on the tonight show. >> this all dates back to when we were growing up together in kenya. >> i got to give you that one.

>> we had constant run ins on the soccer field. he wasn't very good. that was the end of it. >> wise cracks aside, the president told leno he has never actually met donald trump. >> back here at home, virginia congressman jim moran's son has resigned as the field director. all tied to the release of under cover video talking about voter fraud scheme. melanie has been following the controversy all morning. >> the video was released yesterday by a group founded by conservative blogger james okeefe. in the secret recording moran tells an under cover reporter what someone would need if they wanted to commit fraud under virginia's voter id law. >> look at the law.

utility bill or something like that. >> posing as a supporter says he needs help to cast ballots in the name of 100 voters who rarely show up. the new id laws would make it tough and suggest perhaps he put his energy into getting those nonvoters to the polls instead. moran is the one who suggested the idea of using fake utility bills and telling the reporter documents have to look legit. >> he came very close to the ethical line. it was appropriate for him to resign. even though he didn't support or approve what this gentleman was suggesting, this gentleman was baiting him. by brainstorming, he gave approval to what this person was suggesting. it was wrong, it was inappropriate.

>> congressman moran himself is not implicated. he is running to re-election to a 12th term in congress. patrick released a statement that reads at no point will i or have i endorsed unethical behavior. he struck me as being unstable and joking and for only that reason did i humor him. in insight i should have walked away making it clear there is no place in the process for suggestion of a legl behavior joking or not. end quote. political analysts do not expect this will have an impact on jim's re-election campaign but it is refuelling controversy over the laws. virginia's law requires id but does not have to have a picture. as long as the voter's name and address are on it. republicans are saying this video is more evidence supporting laws to require photo identification at the polls. i don't think this is going anywhere any time soon. >> all right. thank you, melanie.

in other news, a montgomery county police officer is under investigation after amateur video was taken of him at an apartment complex. in the video, you can see the officer poke the man in the back with an unknown object. pull his hair and strike him in the chest and stomach. officers were called there for a dispute between a man and woman. officers say the video taken appears to start and stop throughout certain points of the incident. >> duelling protests today at gaulladet university on opposite sides of the gay marriage debate. both groups will be asking for the same thing. reinstate angela. serving at the university's chief diversity officer. put on paid administrative leave after she signed the petition to put maryland's same sex marriage law on the november ballot. >> a person was killed in an

that's how into that music and into that setting i was. how was it being at howard university. it was the preparation because as i have said so many times people have asked me to recall my experience as a student, there were so many young folks from north carolina. i was originally born in north carolina and i thought i was a little bad chick. but when i heard these kids play. my peers sort of kind of made me close my mouth and go into the practice room and practice some more. there's a lot of talent, young talent from the south that is prepared to play, sing, dance, correspond graph anything. >> i think that a lot of people in dc, we claim you.

half the people i told, you know she isn't from dc, they wouldn't believe me cause we claim you so much. >> i'm happy to be claimed. there's enough of me to be claimed. i can go around. and particularly in my experience because my decision to leave the teaching field and become a professional performer of pop music, rock music was made in dc. and it was made because of the support that i had from audiences that used to come to see me at mr. henry's on capitol hill from 2 to 6 for brunch where i played piano and sang. and because i was still teaching school making that transition, i can remember so many sundays when i'd come in with a box of interesting stuff to get the audience involved, there was a song at one time that was called

up up and away. and so i decided to blowup all these balloons, put them in a box and when i wanted people to sing i have inspiration and everybody sang. it was the combination of my teaching experience and the opportunity to be heard as an soloist that was so exciting at this time. and the support i got from the listeners who were there in person as well as people who spread the word were just enormous. when people claim me, i want to be claimed. many many wonderful memories of getting started here and being here and having thinking recently of coming back. >> how did you get from itta to killing me softly? >> the first thing i wanted to

do was bow down. i had dreamed when i had the chance to conduct it, when i had the chance to play for all of the students of todd duncan. and frederick i played for his students and he introduced me to all these other people. i had dreams to play classical piano. not to sing but to play. and not to play for someone else. and when i got there, i was just overwhelmed and it was just absolutely unbelievable to me. and it still is in a big way. and so when i think of all of the stuff that i had accomplished, it starts from howard university. it starts from 15. it starts from going there and having peers who were bigger and greater and more pianistic than i was. put it up

there. could be malla or other cool stuff. and there was a young guy there. envy us.s so i wanted that ability. when i got the chance to sing this beautiful little song first time ever i saw your face and it became such a big hit, i had already taught that to my 7th grade junior high school. and i wanted them to sing. so i thought it would motivate them to sing the first time ever i laid with you. and after the giggles were over, we finally got to sing this song in three part harmony. it was a fascinating experience. i was young enough to appreciate how important that was. accomplishing for me as a teacher and as a learning experience for these young girls.

your reaction to what happened in that debate. right now in the closing argument phase. generally it's seen that president won that debate. got a lot of momentum. mitt romney held his own. the issue is whether the president's win was enough to neutralized his loss from the first debate. the media don't necessarily see it that way. they see mitt romney as having the momentum. they are portraying him as far more calm and less anxious than the president is right now. part of this media narrative is that the president has annie electric for al college firewall that will keep mitt romney's momentum from winning. so that's how the media are portraying it in the final two weeks and it's a perfect horse race for media coverage. >> and it's getting down to the wire. these battleground states are very important. >> focus on 7, 8, at least 9

battleground states and that's where our national election is going to be held. >> let's get reaction from the students. they watched the debate. they are voters. we're going to ask , your reaction to the debate. who do you think won? does it change your opinion? >> first of all, doesn't change my opinion. but i think the president definitely won on points. i think mitt romney won politically with the messaging. he ran as a peace candidate. >> i would agree. i felt as though obama did win the debate but i didn't think mitt romney lost either. very professional and that doesn't change my mind who i'm voting for. >> i agree. decisive win but mitt romney is not going to lose votes. the american policy doesn't care about foreign policy. >> this wasn't really romney's issuend didn't need to do extremely well. when i was watching, i thought he looked

great. he's a great debater. good in that situation . he performed well. the president won but it was expected. i think that's definitely impacting what we're seeing now. >> the debate didn't change anybody's opinion. you still know any friends who are independent? >> going to base the vote on the debate because he's in the military. i don't know i've got to ask him. >> we're trying to get the young votes what's inside the mind of the young voters. all these campaign commercials and the debates and everything. everybody has already made up their mind. any of this effective or effecting the young voters as far as bringing new ones in? >> you have to assume it's

drowning itself out. people are shutting it off. they are not paying attention. it's just noise. but these campaigns have so much money they have to spend it. if they don't spend it, they are going to worry about what's going to happen if the other side gains the advantage. i don't think this generation is paying much attention to those ads. this generation is looking at the economy. is it upward? has there been progress or more ping to look at sort of the social issues that are very important. you are thinking of issues such as gay marriage. abortion rights. women's health and women 's rights. these are important to this generation. it's not just a cookie cutter generation. people with wide variety of views and sometimes the economy takes priority. sometimes social issues do. that's the portrait i think you are seeing. >> thank you very much. that's a wrap from campaign you. back to you in the studio. >> thank you. still ahead at 9:00, jumping for joy. >> we're going to show you the
